I Kings 18:46 , we read that “And the hand of the Lord was on Elijah; and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.”
There’s something beautiful about an assist in football. The crowd roars when a goal is scored, but true lovers of the game know the real magic often lies in the assist. It’s in that perfectly timed pass, that visionary flick, that precise delivery that makes the impossible possible. An assist requires awareness, precision, and mastery. It turns effort into elegance.
Now, imagine God giving you an assist. That’s what I call Divine Assist. Divine assist is when the host of Heaven intervenes to help you achieve your goals in a way that’s beyond natural.
The Beauty of an Assist
Think of Messi threading a pass-through defenders no one else saw. Or Kevin De Bruyne curling one into the exact spot where his teammate will arrive a split second later. That’s not luck; it’s insight, timing, and tunnel vision beyond the ordinary.
In life, we sometimes do our part: we train, plan, and run but sometimes, despite all that, we hit walls. Then, suddenly, something happens beyond our imagination, it could be a connection, an opportunity, a breakthrough that smoothly propels us forward faster than we could ever imagine. In tandem with the famous quote by Vladimir Ilyich Lenin “There are decades where nothing happens; and there are weeks where decades happen.”
That’s divine precision at work.
That’s God saying, “I see where you are, I know where you need to be, and I’ll bridge the gap.”
Elijah’s Divine Assist
Ahab had a chariot, which in modern day can be likened to speed, technology, advantage. Elijah had none of that, yet he outran the king. How?
The hand of God was upon him.
That’s what divine assist looks like.
When God lays His hand on you, the race shifts from effort to enablement. You move from natural speed to supernatural acceleration. Ecclesiastes 9:11 I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all. What takes others years, God helps you achieve in months. Where others are stuck, you move effortlessly.
The Secret of Speed in Life
We often think success is purely about strategy and strength, but Elijah shows us something deeper than we ever imagine: speed comes from the Holy Spirit through the hand of God.
The hand of God:
- Turns delay into direction.
What looked stagnant suddenly starts moving with purpose.
- Transforms limitation into leverage.
You may not have the resources others have, but God’s assist makes your little go far.
- Turns timing into triumph.
When God Becomes Your Playmaker
You see in football, the assist man sees the bigger picture, he scans and has a great sight of the defenders, the space, the opportunity. And then he sets you up to score.
When God is your playmaker, He orchestrates things you couldn’t plan if you tried. He aligns people, timing, and favor in your direction. He makes your path smooth and your effort effective.
All He asks is that you stay positioned: spiritually alert, obedient, and ready. Because just like in football, if you’re out of position, you might miss the divine pass coming your way.
How to Stay Positionally aware for Divine Assist?
1. Stay Connected to the Source (Relationship Before Results)
Divine assist begins with divine relationship.
Before Elijah outran Ahab, he had already spent time on Mount Carmel in prayer, in obedience, and in communion with God. When you walk closely with Him, His hand naturally rests upon you.
You cannot receive God’s help from afar. Intimacy births intervention. If you have not started a relationship with God, take this as your cue. Start by confessing and forsaking your sins.
“Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.” James 4:8
2. Live a Life of Obedience and Sensitivity
Elijah didn’t run on his own terms. He ran when the hand of the Lord came upon him.
That means timing matters.
Many miss divine assist not because God isn’t willing to help, but because they move before He instructs or after He has moved on.
“If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land.” Isaiah 1:19
Obedience positions you in the exact spot where God can pass the ball your way.
3. Pray Until Power Comes
Elijah prayed earnestly. He prayed seven times before rain came. That same posture of prayer prepared him for the supernatural speed that followed. You cannot attract that divine assist if you are not ready to consume yourself in the place of prayer. You must spend time, not a few minutes but long hours immersed in the presence of God.
Prayer attracts the hand of God because it truly is the ultimate expression of dependence.
When you say, “Lord, I can’t do this alone,” heaven says, “Now we can help.”
“They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles.” Isaiah 40:31
Prayer isn’t just talking, it’s aligning. It tunes you into divine timing.
4. Keep Doing Your Part Faithfully
Even with divine assist, Elijah girded up his loins, which means he prepared himself to run.
God does not assist idleness; He empowers diligence. Don’t sit idle. God can only bless the work of your hands!
When you’ve done all you can: studied, planned, sown, worked, that’s exactly when grace takes over. “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might.” Ecclesiastes 9:10
Divine assist magnifies effort, not excuses.
5. Remain Humble when the Speed Comes
When the hand of God lifts you, it’s easy to think it was your strategy or strength. But Elijah’s secret was humility he never mistook divine grace for personal greatness.
“For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.” Philippians 2:13
Pride disconnects you from divine flow; humility keeps the hand of God resting on you.
The divine assist is God stepping into your natural to make it supernatural. It’s what turns ordinary effort into extraordinary outcomes.
So as you chase your goals whether in career, ministry, relationships, or growth, don’t just rely on your hustle. Invite heaven into your process. Pray like Elijah, prepare like an athlete, and stay ready for that divine pass.
When the hand of God comes upon you, you won’t just run, you’ll outrun.
