The Slap That Shaped Me

The day I was slapped!

As an individual, I loved to strive for excellence in everything I do. There’s a quote that rings out loud in my head “there’s no excuse for failure”. You can give yourself a thousand reasons for not doing what you have to do but it doesn’t absolve you from the consequences.

I was privileged to lead a small group at one time. I was incredibly naive in that position. That was the first time I had to be in charge of people. Due to my core nature, I was deeply caring and had good interpersonal relationships with my team.

Something happened one day that changed my life and the entire group. As much as I loved thinking through decisions, I decided to go ahead with a certain decision, which I never shared with anyone. In my mind, I meant good with it. I never discussed it or bothered to hear others’ perspectives.

Well, the decision boomeranged, and it came back to haunt me. The result went sideways, and we were punished. It felt like I was slapped heavily because I got the major brunt of the blame. I learnt from that day onwards, that it was not enough to have good intentions as a leader, decisions must be carried out in the right way, the right method and the right parties must be informed and carried along.

I’m glad that happened. I now know better how to anticipate problems and proffer credible solutions. I know how to be a good team player. And my leadership skills got sharpened. Again, critical thinking and deep analysis became such a skillset I use on a daily. In fact, creating many possible plans and outcomes has been a great tool for me.

What are your greatest skillsets? How did you develop them? How useful have they been to you?

I’d like to hear from you in the comments section.
