Suffering for Christ (SFC)

“Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf.” – 1 Peter 4:16 (KJV)

The Apostle Peter, writing to believers scattered and persecuted in the first century, reminds us that suffering for Christ is not a curse but a privilege. Inherent, in this mystery is the evidence that we belong to God. I know generally the word “suffering” connotes a negative meaning but as a follower of Christ, suffering for Christ should ring a joyous bell, if it doesn’t then you’d need to read with understanding what the Apostle Peter penned down in his first epistle:

“Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.” – 1 Peter 4:12–13 (KJV)

In a world that esteems comfort, pleasure, and instant results, the idea of suffering for Christ sounds strange. Yet, it remains one of the clearest marks of true discipleship. This is a real reminder that the glory that awaits us is directly proportional to the degree suffering for Christ on earth. Let’s quickly explore some individuals who “suffered for Christ”

Biblical Examples of Those Who Suffered for Christ

Stephen (Acts 7) – The first Christian martyr, stoned to death for boldly declaring Jesus as the Messiah. His dying words echoed Christ’s forgiveness: “Lord, lay not this sin to their charge.”

Paul the Apostle (2 Corinthians 11:23–28) – Imprisoned, beaten, shipwrecked, and constantly in peril, Paul bore countless afflictions because he would not deny Christ or cease preaching His gospel.

The Early Church (Acts 8:1–4) – Scattered through persecution, they did not retreat in silence but spread the word of God wherever they went. Without their suffering and great sacrifice, you and I may never have encountered the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ

Modern-Day Examples of Suffering for Christ

Persecuted Believers in Restricted Nations – In countries like North Korea, Afghanistan, and parts of the Middle East, Christians are imprisoned, tortured, or killed simply for professing faith in Jesus. Their faithfulness testifies that Christ is worth more than life itself.

Christians Facing Social Persecution – Even in freer societies, as believers we suffer mockery, exclusion, or loss of opportunities because they refuse to compromise their faith or values. From a student who won’t cheat in exams, to an employee who won’t manipulate accounts, or to a business owner who won’t bow to corruption, and indeed this is the ‘high calling’ to which God has called his children. Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.2 Timothy 3:12. Are you suffering for Christ yet?

Suffering for Christ in Today’s AI and Internet World

For further context, in this digital age dominated by rapid technological growth, artificial intelligence, and an ever-expanding internet culture. The challenges of suffering for Christ may not always be physical chains, it may not present itself like as of old, but they are real and pressing:

Standing for Truth in a World of Lies
Online spaces are filled with misinformation, slander, and ungodly content. Choosing to speak truth, share the gospel, or refuse to join in sinful conversations can make one a target of mockery or “cancel culture.”

Choosing Purity Over Popularity
On social media platforms where immorality trends and compromises are celebrated, a believer who lives by biblical values may be seen as “old-fashioned.” Choosing Christ above likes, followers, or digital applause is a form of suffering.

Refusing to Bow to Unethical Opportunities
The internet and AI create new avenues for “shortcuts” such as plagiarism, fraud, scams, manipulations etc. This is an age where young people are looking for overnight success and success at all costs. However, saying “No” to easy but dishonest gains for Christ’s sake may mean financial loss or slower progress, but it honors Christ.

Boldly Declaring Faith Online
Many Christians fear openly identifying as followers of Christ on the internet, for the sake of not losing friends or being ridiculed. That is being hypocritical to say the least. Suffering for Christ means sharing the gospel even when the world unfollows you. It would mean not exposing your body, not engaging in cyber bullying, not joining ungodly challenges and trends; You could end up in low following, or low engagements. Standing and suffering for Christ is virtuous!

Peter reminds us that:
“If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you.” – 1 Peter 4:14 (KJV)

Let me re-assure you that suffering for Christ is not wasted. What it does is to refine our faith, strengthen our witness, deepen our fellowship with Christ, and prepare us for eternal glory and rewards. Christ Himself suffered, and in sharing His sufferings, we also share His victory. (Philippians 3:10, 1 Peter 1:7, 2 Timothy 2:12, Philippians 1:14)

The call to suffer for Christ is not a call to seek pain, but to remain faithful in the midst of it. Whether it is enduring persecution in hostile nations, standing firm in everyday integrity, or refusing to bow to the world’s digital idols, our joy is this: we are not alone, and our reward is eternal.

Benefits of Suffering for Christ

  1. Deepens Our Fellowship with Christ
    • Suffering draws us closer to Jesus, helping us share in His heart and His mission.
    • “That I may know him,…. and the fellowship of his sufferings.” – Philippians 3:10
  2. Strengthens Our Faith
    • Trials refine and mature our faith like fire purifies gold.
    • “The trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth.” – 1 Peter 1:7
  3. Brings Spiritual Joy and Glory
    • There’s a special joy and divine presence that rests on those who suffer for Christ.
    • “If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you.” – 1 Peter 4:14
  4. Produces Eternal Reward
    • Earthly loss for Christ’s sake is never wasted, it definitely yields eternal gain.
    • “If we suffer, we shall also reign with him.” 2 Timothy 2:12
  5. Becomes a Powerful Witness to Others
    • Suffering with grace and faith points others to the reality of Christ.
    • “Many of the brethren… are much more bold to speak the word without fear.” Philippians 1:14

I’d close with this beautiful verse still from the tables of Elder Peter.

“But and if ye suffer for righteousness’ sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled.” – 1 Peter 3:14 (KJV)

God is with you! God will honour you! God will promote you! It pays to suffer for Christ!

If you are yet to start a relationship with Christ, then you must do that first by confessing and forsaking sins, and asking Him in your heart, there and then will you have the capacity to suffer for Christ.

As we close this year 2025, and look forward to 2026, ponder on these solemn words from this popular hymn “I gave my life for thee, what hast thou given for me?”

God bless you!
