I wrote this in 2017. I still find it very helpful and relevant today. Enjoy!!!
8 valuable lessons to be learnt from that adorable manager “Antonio Conte”. I am not a fan of Chelsea club but please permit me to share these few observations with you. I hope you find it helpful.
1. Set your mind on goals and not obstacles: Some of the few obstacles for Antonio Conte was: going to a different league (one of the best in the world) which had a different language, culture, style of play, well seasoned counterpart managers…a Mourinho who needs to prove to Chelsea that they are so wrong for sacking him, his records in EPL are incredible except for the last. A diligent Klopp, an outstanding Guardiola, a very experienced Wenger and the list goes on. Conte came on board with a goal and a game plan that was diligently executed which birth laudable results. Have a goal, set plans and work till they are achieved.
2. Show people your results not your game plan(or plans): Some Chelsea fans were skeptical at the beginning of the season of the quality of their new manager despite how well he performed at Juventus. Another reason for the fear was that Antonio was keen to Italy’s success in Euro 2016. In fact, Chelsea was not on his mind neither were the thoughts of buying new players anywhere around his head. Trust me, he was in the real sense strategically studying the new terrain, setting out plans. Let people believe you by the results of your actions.
3. Never settle for less: One beautiful thing to admire in this man is his resilient efforts to be at their best on each game. He’d not relax on his oars after a loss,he goes to each game with a mind to win with many goals. He once said that he experiences sleepless night whenever his team losses. You should not feel so normal when you are not getting it right. When you fail, rise and re-strategize.
4. Dire Passion and Commitment: I have seen managers celebrate very important goals, I mean those ones that lifts the trophy for them, or advance them to the next round in a competition. Conte is simply unique, he celebrates each goal with vehement ecstasy. I mean his passion for the team is profound. His commitment is worthy of envy. You’d know a manager that knows what he wants. Take a clue,in whatever you find yourself doing, do it with much passion, let people wonder if you are crazy, they will give the right answer in the end.
5. Square peg, square hole: In life we must learn that the beauty of doing the right things is not just at the right time alone but in the right way. You ever wonder that the same players Mourinho had and failed woefully were the ones Antonio used and got the desired result. My dear, if a method is not working, why don’t you try another. Conte had a unique formation, he had a superb influence on the players. They played with different energy in the second half of each match. If you are a leader at work, church or anywhere at all and things are not going well, see yourself as the fault, the solution is within you.
6. Team Spirit: There’s a lesson Conte taught the players, the quality of team work. He didn’t end there, he showed them how each one is important to the team. How? He understands very well each of the players’ ability. So it was quite easy to let anyone who feels he is indispensable how useless he’s and the opposite holds. Who can predict that Chelsea will be so fine without legend Terry or that a Batshuayi will seal the trophy?
He appreciates and celebrates each player. That's the least we can do as leaders to appreciate and value each member of our team and help them to function properly. A team of average players with a good team spirit is better than expensive, skilled players playing individualistically.
7. Superb in managing crises: I really can’t tell you to detail of Costa and his January transfer trauma or of other crises that faced Chelsea during the season. But one thing I can say emphatically is that Conte shoulders storms, crises in a simply mature manner. He’s an understanding coach. I mean there would have been times the players or fans would have disagree to some of his tactics but he was keen to leverage between what will work and what can work. Kudos. If you want to know a good leader, check him out during the period of crises. His composure, approach, solution orientation, his ability to take charge, own faults, distribute responsibilities.
8. One step at a time: I love that proverb “a journey of a thousand miles begins with a step”. You know, it begins but does not end there. Conte approach each game with a fresh dimension and tactics. He viewed each has an opportunity to learn the mistake of the past and improve for a better result. Learn to complete a task first and then face the other. It’s one step at a time. Never underestimate the value of taking your time to learn from mistakes, experience, right knowledge for each phase of your life. Please enjoy your weekend as you ponder and acts on these nuggets.
Love you all!!!!
