Ocean (Part 1)

There’s something particularly special about this song. It seems to fit in every kind of situation I find myself. I find sweet solace whenever I listen to it. Infact, I voted it my all time best song. I can’t imagine putting a song on repeat all day for two consecutive days. Well, that was the exact thing that happened to me when I encountered with this song. “Oceans” always has a way of taking me from that moody, gloomy feeling into some lively ones. It really does take me from the land to the oceans.

I have been wondering intently why the love for this song. Could it be the title of the song that won my heart? Or the lyrics? Maybe the lyrics of the bridge? I know the lyrics is not the conventional ones, a lot of deep meanings are entrenched within. Maybe its the singer, Taya Smith. Taya Smith has a distinct sonorous and calm voice that intercepts with my senses , or say suits my personality. The way she vocalises songs draw a lot of correlations to my most inner membrane. It could also be the fact that the instrumentals were topnotch. In one of the videos Taya allowed everyone join in the bridge, and it was nirvana.

I cannot over emphasize the effect of repetition of that bridge for 5 solid times, man, that was incredible. My thoughts roamed around how oceans, a non living object was used to demonstrate God’s care for us. Finally, maybe the inclusion of the word “spirit” draws the Holy spirit to that song everytime. I believe that song was spirit-inspired and spirit-sung.

You know, answers are yet to be found to my questions. On a second guess, I think its the combination of all the factors. Whenever I want to listen to that bridge, I close my eyes just like Taya did in one of the videos, then I try to internalize each words. The first line of the bridge says “Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders”. The oceans is one of the water bodies that doesnt have borders or call it boundaries. It drives to any coast at anytime, anywhere. When trust is without borders means trusting without bounds. You dont know what is ahead but you trust that it is going to be well. Thats the highest point of human’s fragility. Praying for God’s spirit leading at that juncture, is essential. Even when you don’t see anything working or you don’t see God moving or you don’t see situations changing. You still trust.

“Let me walk upon the waters”. Why would anyone even choose to walk upon the waters? We all know that that’s practically impossible to do. Anyone who tries it will sink. I remember the story of Peter in the Bible. Jesus being a super being walked upon the waters . Yes, the son of God most high. The second person in trinity did the most humanly impossible herculean task. With God all things are possible!!  When Peter spotted Jesus walking on the water, he called out to the master. And Jesus commanded that he should come join him. I want to imagine that a few reactions would have taken place in that instant.

Luke could probably say don’t try to go in that water. You’d be a dead man in no time. Thomas would have even said ” Are you sure that’s Jesus? . Maybe Andrew said ‘Peter, my brother, I understand that we’ve been both fishermen from birth but you see this journey you want to embark is too risky, Water is no one’s friend’. Peter must have also had to debate it out in his head but of course he summoned courage and went up in the water. Yes, Peter walked on waters. He gradually approached towards Jesus.

Miraculous! I find it even surreal to pen down that a human like me did walk on waters. Truth is, Peter did. He continued walking as long as his eyes were set on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. In a matter of seconds that Peter lost focus from Jesus, he began to sank. This is the case with so many of us Christians. When we begin to feel self-sufficient, we lose sight of Jesus and then we’d experience decline.

Peter having discovered his state of heplesness, cried out for help. All thanks to our good master, who immediately reached out his arms and carefully guided Peter. Jesus is ever ready to do just same. If you’ve once known Him and have forsaken  Him, give a second thought to that decision. And to those who have been carelessly moving in folly, do a U-turn today. His arms are still wide open.

Watch out for the continuing part.
