Embrace the FAIL: My Hard-Earned Lesson in Resilience

“You ain’t going nowhere son, you ought to go back to driving a truck”

That was the statement hurled at Elvis Presley after his first performance. He rose aginst those odds to become a legendary musician and was dubbed as “the king of rock n roll”

Failure is not just a part of life, but it also has a way of propelling one to attempt again and this time to perform better.

I failed the course – Mathematics woefully in my junior high school. When I got into the seniors, I was intentional about my success. I did extra lessons, solved as many questions as possible. I later represented my school in Mathematics competition.

What if you’ve always

I learn more when I fail.

I went into the exam hall very optimistic, I had read thoroughly – covered all the topics and syllabus. When the questions were brought, I was shocked. At that point, I couldn’t go all teary. They appeared simple but quite complicated. My hopes got dashed. I began having cold feet. Well, I went ahead to attempt it nonetheless.

The result came in few weeks and I failed honorably. It was daunting. I’d always passed any exams I wrote.

This was my story during my first attempt on ACCA exams. I literally got humbled. I was so dissuaded. I worried about the cost of the paper, the preparations and the hardwork.

I wrote the paper (PM) again, and this time, I passed. I’d learnt the technique of answering questions, studied previous questions and prepared more adequately.

It’s been quite a journey and I hope to round it up in this year. Wish me well!

It later dawned on me, that life is truly not a bed of roses. It doesn’t go your way always. If you’ve not been used to failing, embrace it – it’s a significant part of life. You’d learn more and become a better person.

That experience taught me, that

*FAIL – First Attempt in Learning. You might not get it right at the first attempt, don’t be discouraged, just try again.

*Everything in life works based on principles. Apply the right principles, and you’d get the right results

*You are not an island. You should get help and resources from family, friends, mentors or colleagues.
