Manually Automated Systems

One day, we will find the right punishment to the category of people who over promise and under deliver. This system is capable of doing xyz, when it can’t even do abc not to talk of ghi.

One of the toughest schedule I have ever had to prepare in my corporate life was extremely manual. It was rigorous, stressful and requires a level of painstaking efforts to prepare. The only good part was that the template was developed with a lot of checks, so before you go too far, you already have warning signs ⚠️ to say something is not feeding in correctly.

This schedule takes average of 6-7days to finish. And when you start in the morning, it’s till late in the night. I have never imagined that life can be that hard before but yeah that was exactly it. I don’t even dread doing it, I just hated how monotonous the inputs were, and the output doesn’t even quite tell the story of the exactitude attention that had been given to it.

When the day came that I was informed that this schedule was going to be automated, you can imagine the happiness on my face. It was like winning a jackpot. I gave the team all the fullest support for its success. And trust me, a good job was done. After automation, it took about 6-7hours to finish the schedule from end-to-end. I don’t like to be like those senior brothers that would say “you people are enjoying now, we know what our eyes use to see in preparing this thing and the number of days it takes us”

But I dare to say, when I look back now, “Omo, I suffered” 😂I’m glad the people using it now are enjoying the system. Now back to the main point of this post. After this good testimony, when I hear automation, I leap for joy.

Only that my  experience this time, took me to a place where I don’t know at all, this supposed automation, in my dear people’s parlance ran me “corporate street”. Because I deserve some explanations on why I was practically doing the same thing before and after automation. System results were so crazy that the question I can’t seem to remember an answer for anymore, is if there was no UAT done before going live? If you ask me…

The only thing I can recall right now, were the Heaven on earth, luscious promises of the system but it’s okay, I have an “Olugbeja”. I rest my case. Will continue with my manually automated system till when I can’t “k’unt”

📌 What has been your experience about automations?

📌 Which of the two stories resonates more with you?
