Taking Ownership of Your Career Growth

I used to weigh 90k

If you’ve failed in whatever you’ve chosen to do, go back to the drawing board and re-strategize. Let go or rehash it. Drawing the thin line in between is key.

Teach your audience something you are good at

A soft spoken word turns wrath away

Don’t stop learning!

“The hunger to keep learning must always be sustained in whatever you find yourself doing.” This is one skill I have improved on so much in the last couple of years.

Last weekend, I had a very fruitful conversation with a mentor. The major take home for me was when he said:

“Regardless of the nature of your boss, whether, soft, helpful, mean, wicked or whatsoever, you’re the architect of your career growth.

You must ensure you research more. Become an oracle for consultation by your colleagues on pertinent matters. Indeed, you must be a problem solver – take the lead to fix a problem, make valid contributions and being intentional to stand out.

That way, your capacity increases, you become more visible and growth is certain.”

During the week, I learnt something also in a discussion with my boss, he said:

“You must be humble enough to learn from others. We all need one another, both the client and auditors. No one is an island of knowledge. Understand that you don’t know it all. Sometimes you make errors, others spot it and vice-versa but you must be ready to learn.”

I spoke to a former colleague some days ago. I had a need to understand the workings of a transaction and I knew he was a guru on it. He didn’t hesitate to explain until he was sure I understood it. He added that it meant so much for him that I reached out.  He mentioned also that seeking to learn and relearn are qualities of a high level professional.

I couldn’t be more proud of myself.

In summary, I’m saying that you must keep learning to grow. It’s a skill and as well as a quality you need to possess in your career and in life.

Happy weekend.
