“I ran away from LinkedIn. The intimidation was too much. It felt like I was wasting my life whenever I read other people’s profile”
I don’t have the statistics for the number of people who have said this one time or the other. But let me take a guess that about 60% of LinkedIn users have. I definitely would have fallen within the top 10% of that category, but I didn’t bother to update my profile for a long time. I didn’t even have the app on my phone.
What I discovered later,
1. LinkedIn Optimisation – You can’t have an haggard profile and feel good. With what you have and where you are, take time to optimize your profile. I love what Jones Profit told us at CharTech even if you’re a student, redesign your about, and other sections of your profile.
2. Connect Strategically – LinkedIn is a professional SM platform, probably the only one different from other SM apps. I look up people in my field, the certifications, skills and experiences, pick up the relevant work on them and include on my profile. That’s how you grow. Connect with MDs, CEOs, CFOs, Tech Experts, Presidents, top organizations etc Follow their post. Read
3. Job Search – I got at least two jobs through LinkedIn. I’ve gotten nothing less than 15 interview invites via LinkedIn. I ‘stumbled’ on LinkedIn after many years back in 2021. The question I’m yet to figure an answer for was, why did I ever leave?
Don’t be intimidated, everyone started from somewhere.
4. Read, read and keep reading – I don’t miss Yemi Fasheun’s Monday post. You know why already, Mondays is the most dreaded office day. I need a sharp tonic to keep the day going. Harvard Business reviews can’t be missed.
I read up articles by Jones Profit. Meeting him has been nothing but profitable. Emmanuel Nduka are the kind of stories I love. Bamgbaye post are really insightful. Psychologist short tweets have had great impacts on me. Bridgette Hyacinth’s LinkedIn post made me understand human relationships without trying. I possibly can’t mention everyone on LinkedIn that have imparted my life. Like my friend David Alade says “if we commit ourselves to reading and therefore increasing in knowledge, only God can limit how far we can go in life.”
I hope you’ve learnt a number of things today. Return ye to LinkedIn, all ye that have fled on whatever reasons, I come in peace
